In mid-2021 at Gong we combined a rebrand with a new narrative that was bigger, bolder, more enterprise-ready, and clearly differentiated. The visual brand we shipped then is still largely in place today. Sales’ immediate question was the one every PMM hears: cool new story, but how does this help me win more deals, win them faster, and close bigger ones?
We had content-management systems that could track deck adoption, but those were pure vanity metrics with no proven correlation to revenue. Product marketing spans the entire funnel—awareness, deal acceleration, even post-sale adoption—so the menu of possible metrics is huge. Without a single, defensible measure, it was nearly impossible to show stakeholders that the new narrative actually moved the business.
We built a simple, repeatable playbook:
We later refined the method by adding a time dimension (before/after deltas) so we could separate messaging lift from the natural performance of top reps.
Gong trackers (keyword and expression monitors with light AI) sitting on top of Gong’s conversation-intelligence platform; Salesforce CRM for revenue and pipeline data; RevOps-owned Excel models when native Gong reporting in 2021 wasn’t granular enough. The same pattern works with Clary, Fathom, or any modern conversation-intelligence tool.
We established a clear correlation: reps who consistently used the new messaging closed more deals and moved through pipeline stages faster. That single proof point turned the conversation from “how many assets did PMM ship?” into “when we use this narrative we win more.” The playbook became our standard at subsequent companies and continues to evolve at Cordial.
Spread the word and give this marketer’s work the audience it deserves.
