What signed-out readers see

Signed-out readers see the whole case study, then a dismissible sign-up prompt at The approach.

The case study is already published. Publish to your public URL covers Publish and /c/{slug}. Open that URL in a signed-out browser, or use a private window. Anyone with the link can read the whole story. No account is needed.

  1. Open /c/{slug} while signed out. Every section the author filled in renders. Empty sections are skipped. Below the story, comments are visible but read-only, with no place to write one. Share this case study and Discover more on Dusted appear too. The View feed link under Discover more on Dusted goes to Explore.

  2. Keep scrolling. When you reach the first couple of lines of The approach, a sign-up modal titled Sign up to keep reading Dusted opens. It offers Continue with LinkedIn and Continue with email. Existing user? sits next to Log In. The return path is the same /c/{slug} page. Create your account covers both sign-up options.

  3. Close the modal when you want to keep reading. Click the X in the corner, click Continue reading, press Esc, or click outside the modal. You stay at the same scroll position.

  4. The modal appears at most once per browser session. It does not open again on the same case study, and it does not open on other case studies in that tab. A new tab or a new session can show it again. Very short case studies, with fewer than three sections, never show it. It also stays away for the rest of the page if another sign-in window already opened there, for example after you click upvote.

  5. The modal only opens after you scroll yourself, with the wheel, a finger drag, or the keyboard. If you arrive through a comments link or a quote link that jumps down the page, it stays closed until you scroll on your own. Clicking or tapping a control that scrolls the page for you, such as the comments icon, does not count.

  6. Signed-in readers never see the modal. Upvote, bookmark, and similar controls still ask a signed-out reader to sign in first. A signed-out reader does not see Edit. Do not send a /p/{slug} link. That route 404s.

Return to Publish to your public URL if you need Publish, /c/{slug}, or the celebration. Create your account covers sign-up.
